Virginia (Ginna) Atlkins Lynd of Prairie Village, Kansas died peacefully at home on January 24, 2021. She was born on October 29, 1929, the daughter of Wesley and Margaret Atkins and was raised with her sister, Julie Ann Atkins Consalus in Clinton, Missouri.
Ginna graduated from the Clinton, MO schools in 1947. She was a graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia with a BS in Elementary Education. Later, she received a master’s degree in Counseling and Education from UMKC. She greatly enjoyed teaching first graders to read in both Tucson, Arizona and Kansas City, Missouri.
Ginna was a member and President of Kappa Kappa Gamma fraternity and Pi Lambda Theta, an education honor society. In Kansas City, she met and married her husband, Lloyd Lynd Jr. who died in 2006. They were members of Second Presbyterian Church in Kansas City where she served as an elder, teacher, and tutor.
Ginna was involved in many civic and non-profit organizations. In 1989 she was awarded the outstanding volunteer for CASA of Kansas City, MO where she volunteered while a member of the Junior League. She was both a patron and a volunteer at the Children’s Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC).
Book clubs, bridge, photography and painting were Ginna’s favorite pastimes. She and her husband also travelled often. Her last six years were enjoyed at Claridge Court where she continued her painting and reading serving on the library committee.
Ginna self-published a book, To Missouri and Beyond in which she tells stories of her father’s Atkins and Elliot ancestor’s early days moving from Virginia to Kentucky and on to Missouri in the 1850’s.
She is survived by her three children Lloyd Lynd (Becky) of Tennessee, Elizabeth Escamilla (Paul) of Texas, and Kathryn Lynd of Arizona; five grandchildren Sarah (Matthew) Jared (Kayley) Dave, Emily (Chris) and Anna; one great-granddaughter, Annie and her nieces and nephews. The family will gather at a later date to honor her life.
