Virginia Orrick

Virginia “Ginnie” Lyth Orrick, age 94, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2022.  A celebration of life service will be at noon on Friday - January 28, 2022 at Overland Park Funeral Chapel 8201 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, Kansas 66204. A visitation will be prior to the service from 11:00 - noon.  A private graveside service for the family will be held with internment at Lenape Cemetery, Linwood, Kansas.

Ginnie was born August 14, 1927, in Kansas City, Kansas, the third child of Mary (Dugan) and Alfred H. Lyth   She was married on June 12, 1947 at Central Christian Church in Kansas City, Kansas, to Robert “Bob” Orrick, who proceeded her in death on July 16, 2010.

Ginnie graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1944 and attended Park College and the University of Kansas.  She taught fifth grade at Bonner Springs Elementary School and continued as a part-time substitute teacher for several years after her marriage.  Known for her kindness, outgoing personality, and friendly smile, Ginnie made friends wherever she went. Ginnie was proud of her Kansas heritage, as well as her Irish (Dugan) and Danish (Lyth) ancestry.  She grew up in a household with loving parents who found joy in working hard and spending time with family and friends.

Ginnie had been an active member of Central Christian Church in Kansas City, Kansas, for more than 30 years and then a member of Countryside Christian Church in Mission, Kansas.  She later became a member of Hillcrest Christian Church in Overland Park, Kansas.  Ginnie was firm in her faith and made prayer and Bible reading part of her daily life. Her belief in life eternal gave her strength and great hope for better things to come.  She loved her family and friends with unending kindness and generosity. She was able to preserve the joy of life throughout her 94 years, always full of love and hope. Ginnie always cheered for her children and grandchildren and celebrated their accomplishments.  Ginnie’s family was blessed to have been loved by her and she will be forever loved and missed by many.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Debby and son-in-law, John Howland, of Jefferson City, Missouri; four grandchildren, Jill Howland Westra of Westwood, Kansas, Jeff Howland and his wife Kelly of Overland Park, Kansas, Scott Orrick of Omaha, Nebraska, and David Orrick and his wife Samantha of Omaha, Nebraska; six great granddaughters, Julia, Charlotte, Monroe, Dylan, Brooklyn, and Maryellen; a devoted brother-in-law, Ray Alderson; two dear nieces, Virginia Alderson McGaha (Howard) and Laura Alderson Musil (Don); and very special cousin, Mary Ellen Carden.

Ginnie was preceded in death by her brother, Alfred R. Lyth, her parents, her son,

Alfred R. R. Orrick, her husband of 63 years, Robert Orrick, and her sister, Mary Lyth Alderson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested in Ginnie’s memory to Hillcrest Christian Church, 11411 Quivira Road, Overland Park, Kansas 66210.
