Mark Edward Dmytryk

September 20, 1955 ~ May 28, 2021 (age 65)

Obituary

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 20, 1955, Mark Dmytryk grew up in Webster Groves and attended Mary, Queen of Peace Grade School and St. John Vianney High School. He was precocious and passionate about three things: musical theatre, his friends and his pets.

Mark studied acting and directing at The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University and at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. Cast in many productions, he was probably most proud of playing Peter in Peter Pan; one of very few males to be cast in the role. He also played Goat in Tent Repertory’s production of The Robber Bridegroom. After school, Mark moved to New York City where he acted in and directed off-Broadway productions including the world premiere of Delta Lives (later Delta Triangle) by Steven Schwab. Soon after his arrival in New York, Mark became Ann Reinking’s personal assistant and worked closely with her through numerous engagements including Sweet Charity on Broadway, the film Mickie & Maude, her one woman show, Music Moves Me at the Joyce Theatre and also the Westwood Playhouse in Los Angeles. With his musical theatre pedigree and his love of animals, he was the perfect guy for the job. Mark often cared for Ann’s dogs, including Chris, the little white poodle who can be seen on her arm in the film All That Jazz.

Mark was one of a kind and charmed many with his bawdy sense of humor and his zeal for people and relationships. After moving to Kansas City in the early 1990s, he suffered a brain injury in an automobile accident and struggled with medical issues thereafter. Although his short-term memory was weak, he never forgot a birthday or an anniversary and could regale his friends with great stories of shows, events and memories of the past.

Mark was predeceased by his parents, Ann Maureen (Smith) and Eugene T. Dmytryk, M.D., and his brother, Eugene T. (surviving Nicki) Dmytryk, II M.D. Mark is survived by his sister, Jeanne (Timothy) Drone, his brother Dennis (Patti) Dmytryk and their children, Marc and Maureen. Mark is also survived by many good friends and his beloved Scooter, a 13-year-old mixed-breed rescue dog who was at his side when he passed.

“And that's my home where dreams are born,
And time is never planned
Just think of lovely things
And your heart will fly on wings,
Forever in Never Never Land”

From the musical Peter Pan, Lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Music by Jule Styne
