Marilyn A. Simes

December 10, 1921 — September 24, 2021

Marilyn Ann Simes, age 99, Overland Park, Kansas passed away September 24, 2021 in her home surrounded by family.

Marilyn was born December 10, 1921 in Canton, Ohio where she spent her entire childhood. Growing up she loved softball, tennis, basketball, violin, swimming and singing. Some of her greatest high school achievements were playing first violin in the orchestra and becoming the first ever drum major. She graduated from Canton Lehman High School in 1938 then attended Drake University for one year. After her schooling she played semi-pro softball and had an offer to go pro with a Pittsburgh team, which she declined. She then started her own girl’s orchestra called the Blue Orchids.

Marilyn met her husband Robert (Bob) Simes on a blind date and they were married July 19, 1948. They spent the beginning part of their marriage touring the United States with Bob’s band. They temporarily lived in Des Moines, Iowa where Marilyn was the first chair violinist in the Des Moines Symphony. They eventually settled down with their two children and bought their home in Overland Park, Kansas where Marilyn lived the remainder of her life. She spent 31 years working as a tax preparer at H&R Block where she became an Enrolled IRS Agent. After retirement she spent most of her time playing cards, fly fishing, and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her sister Mildred (Midge) Horton, children Patricia Koepke (Andrew) and David Simes, grandchildren Daniel Simes, Harmony Crow (Jason), Sophie Simes, Christine Koepke, and Kathleen Koepke.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Simes, parents Ralph and Cora Reed, her son Allen Simes, and sisters Catherine (Kate) Carter, Patricia (Pat) Mohler.
