Margaret Hutchinson

November 24, 1920 — May 24, 2020

Overland Park, KS

Margaret Louise Landor Hutchinson of Mission, KS, passed away peacefully May 24, 2020.  Margaret was cared for at Morningside Place in Overland Park, for the last 3 years. She was a parishioner of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Mission, KS, where she served as a Sunday Lector and was a Circle Member in the Women's Club.

Margaret was born November 24, 1920, and raised in the historic Quindaro area of Kansas City, KS.  Her parents, Reverend Edward Felix Landor and Essie Jean Vernon Landor preceded Margaret in death, as well as her husband, Sam Hutchinson, whom she married in 1968, son Edward T. Rollins, her sister Willie Jean Landor Corbitt, and brother Edward Ralph Landor.  She is survived by her son, Rev. Andrew Rollins, several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Margaret graduated from Lincoln University in Jefferson, MO, and was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.  After returning to her home in Kansas City, she enjoyed a rewarding career with the Social Security Administration, serving as the first black claims representative for the government agency.  She had a deep bond with the Quindaro community stemming from being the niece of one of its most influential leaders, Bishop William Tecumseh Vernon of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.  In his distinguished career, he served as President of Western University and Registrar of the United States Treasury. Margaret converted to the Catholic faith in her early 30’s, but always treasured her family’s faith roots and influence in her life.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Margaret's long and beautiful life here on earth at a Mass of Resurrection on Friday, June 5, 2020, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 5500 Woodson, Mission, KS at 10:00AM. Private burial will follow at a later date.  We know and trust Margaret is resting in eternal glory with her Lord and Savior.
