Al Schuman

Al Byron Schuman, age 82 of Fremont, Nebraska passed away on May 25, 2021, at Brookdale Wornall Place in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born April 19, 1939, to Thelma (Layton) and Harry Schuman of Melbeta, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Harry Lee “Chooch” (Virginia ”Jo”). Al is survived by his beloved wife Evelyn Tatsuno; sons James Edward (Rosemary) of Omaha, Nebraska, and Matthew Byron (Amy) of Prairie Village, Kansas; nine grandchildren (Seth, Selena, Cedric, Ashlee, Blake (Bailey), Ali, Kayla, Molly, Justin); five great grandchildren; sister Jane Lester of Fremont, California; and three nieces Becky Lester, Tracie (Dave) Manza, and Torie (Jeff) Turk.

Al raised his family in Fremont, Nebraska while working at Valmont as a stacker crane operator. He retired from Valmont Industries, Inc. in 1996. He and Evie recently moved to Kansas City to be closer to their son Matt.

Al celebrated life in many ways. He grew up fishing Nine Mile Creek with his father. He spent many years in a boat on one of Nebraska’s reservoirs, a few times being out fished by his wife Evie. An avid walleye fisherman, he shared the bounty of his skills with many friends and family. He passed the love of fishing to his sons and grandchildren. The laughter and storytelling around the campfire were his greatest joy.

Al also loved woodworking and their house was adorned with many pieces. He passed the love of sawdust to his oldest son and grandsons.

Married 59 years, Al and Evie were inseparable and spent many years during their marriage in a camper and fishing boat. They loved traveling the southwestern U.S. as well as spending time in Western Nebraska, near Scottsbluff, which he considered God’s country.

Al leaves a legacy of fishing, woodworking, storytelling, and his love of family and friends that will survive many generations to come.

The family plans a private ceremony in Melbeta, Nebraska, at a later date.
