Mr. William Woodson

November 9, 1921 — February 18, 2014

William "Bill" Woodson, 92, of Mission Hills, died peacefully in his sleep at Bishop Spencer Place on February 18, 2014, where he enjoyed his later years. Bill was born on November 9, 1921 in Kansas City, MO to Martha Allen Woodson and Winston Hamilton Woodson. He lived in the area his entire life, except for his college years at Mizzou, followed by a stint as an officer in the Navy during World War II, before graduating from the University of Michigan Law School. After law school he returned to Kansas City where he met the love of his life, Nancy Senter, who was his wife and sweetheart of 53 years until her death in 2005. Bill was a litigation attorney and partner at Spencer, Fane, Britt & Browne for over 40 years and in addition to being a member of various bar associations, he chaired a committee for the Missouri Supreme Court that investigated ethics complaints.
Bill had a variety of interests. Being a Tiger fan was at the top of his list. He had season tickets for years and rarely missed watching them play on TV. Bill was a Tiger Booster and past President of the KC Alumni Association. He enjoyed playing golf with friends at Mission Hills Country Club and had two hole-in-ones as a teen. Bill loved the camaraderie of the Jolly Timers Outdoor Club almost as much as the fishing itself. There were also great fishing stories created on trips with his brothers, son and nephews. He was an avid card player, enjoying bridge and gin rummy. Few knew that Bill was a figure skater, who also loved hockey. Always a favorite thing was time with the family at the Lake of the Ozarks and trips to all states, except Alaska.
As a member of Phi Delta Theta, Bill was honored as Phi of the Year. He was also a member of the Vanguard Club, the University Club and the Kansas City Club.
Bill was truly a gentleman, who made everyone around him feel good. He was admired by many for his integrity and concern for others. He also was a man of strong opinion who could take either side of a good argument. He was a great guy.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Nancy, son John Senter Woodson and brother Allen Woodson and his wife Sarah Jane. He is survived by daughter, Melanie, and son-in-law, John Hastings, Leawood; son, Jim, and wife, Mindi Brooks Woodson, St.Paul, MN; grandchildren, Emily, Billy, Matthew (Elizabeth), and David (Amy) Hastings, Libby and Betsi-Kate Woodson; and five great-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother and his wife, John Tucker and Lynda Woodson, Deerfield, IL; sister-in-law Margaret Senter Pratt; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Colonial Church of Prairie Village, 7039 Mission Rd., on Monday, February 24 at 3:00. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Mizzou or City Union Mission.
