Virginia (Ginnie) McCloskey

December 30, 1921 — December 31, 2021

Mission

Virginia Louise McCloskey, “Ginnie,” was born on Dec. 30, 1921 and she died one day after her 100th birthday: Dec. 31, 2021. Ginnie, known as “GG" to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, grew up in El Reno, OK., daughter of Grady Walker Timberlake and Flora Mae Howell.

She made her way to Leawood, KS. by way of her late husband, William Robert McCloskey. Together they created a beautiful, meaningful, art-filled life — and happily devoted their married years to raising two children, Donna Pat Buckley [2006] and William Robert McCloskey, Jr. “Billy” (2001). Ginnie is survived by her granddaughters, Kelly Mercer, Laurie Juhnke (Mark), and Katie Haywood (Matt), grandchildren Dylan Mercer, Sullivan and Charlotte Juhnke, and Jack, Drew, and Ellie Haywood.

Ginnie had style, spunk, wit, and perseverance. These qualities simultaneously served her and others well.  Her daughter, Donna, was her spitting image. They were deeply connected as mother-daughter and closest confidantes. Her son, Billy, was the younger of the two. He developed a mental handicap as a baby due to a brain disorder. That diagnosis was a springboard to creating a full life for Billy, despite his challenges. Some would say his life gave Ginnie meaning and purpose: she helped him seek employment and worked tirelessly to fill his life with friendships within the special needs community. If she wasn’t spending time with family, you could find her singing in the church choir, getting donuts (almost daily), sweeping the driveway, or working in her yard. Ginnie was never without a dog, she rarely sat down, she always had a circle of friends nearby, and never left the house without a piece of statement jewelry.

Ginnie’s journal from 1979 summed up her intentions then and now: "I pray that I can serve others | for that’s the only way | to be truly happy | till God takes us away.” In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in Ginnie’s name to: Friends of JCDS , 10501 Lackman Rd., Lenexa, KS 66219.
