OPAL FERN LAY SCHUETZ (1912 – 2012)

Overland Park, KS

Opal Schuetz (100) of Overland Park, KS, and formerly of Effingham and Merritt Island, FL, passed away Saturday, November 3, 2012, at her home. Opal was born August 10, 1912, in Knoxville, TN, the eldest child of Jesse and Carrie (Evans) Lay.

In Illinois, she also resided in Ramsey, Arthur, and St.Elmo; she and her late husband Merrill (M.C.) both graduated from St.Elmo High School (1931) before moving to St.Louis, MO, and arriving in Effingham by 1937.

In Effingham, she and her husband raised their three children, all Effingham High School graduates. She enjoyed both the Girl Scout and Boy Scout activities, both as a leader and a supportive parent. She was employed by the Effingham County Farm Bureau and as a department manager / buyer in Jansen's Department Store. Her hobbies were ceramics, oil painting, and travel with her college friends to Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Hawaii, and Australia.

She is survived by her daughters Connie (Kent) Mowe and Margie (Harold) Whitney; grandchildren Johanna, Seth, and Tyler (Stephanie) Mowe, Gina (Jack) Tolman, and Wanda (Rodney) Core; great grandchildren Jennifer, Whitney, Alexis, Michael, Hayley, Jonathan, Kelly, and Kara; great great grandchildren Martin, Addison, and Ryan; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was predeceased by husband Merrill, Sr; son Merrill, Jr.; and 2 grandsons.

Memorial services and internment will be at Arborcrest Cemetery in the spring of 2013. Memorial donations may be made to the Centenary Methodist Church, 203 E Grove Ave., Effingham, IL 62401 or the American Heart Association, 6800 W. 93rd Street, Overland Park, KS 66212.
