Maria Appletoft

February 5, 1927 — August 18, 2015

Maria Eleonore Appletoft, 88, Overland Park, Kansas, beloved mother and grandmother passed away peacefully on August 18, 2015. Visitation will be held 12:00 – 1:30pm, Friday, August 28, 2015 at  Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home in Rapid City, South Dakota, followed by a graveside service at 2:30 pm at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD.

Eleonore was born February 5, 1927 in Lampertheim, Germany to Johann and Katharina (Jakob) Metzger.  Eleonore lived in Germany where she met her husband, Lloyd A. Appletoft, who was serving in the US Army and stationed in Germany. They married and moved to the United States.  During his service, they were stationed both in the US and in Germany many times.  In 1969, they settled in Redfield, SD until 1973 when they moved to Rapid City, SD.  During her years in Rapid City, Eleonore worked civil service at Ellsworth AFB, was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, TREA and VFW.  She made many lifelong friends in Rapid City. In 2001, Eleonore moved to Overland Park, KS.  She enjoyed shopping, spending time with her grandsons and was an enthusiastic fan of the KC Royals and KC Chiefs.  Her favorite times were traveling back to Germany to visit family, playing bingo and she always enjoyed a glass of wine and dining out with family and friends. Her love of a good time and perseverance will be greatly missed.  The family would like to thank Yvette, her caregiver and friend of many years.

Eleonore was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, a grandson, Riley Appletoft, and her two sisters, Martha Schanz and Paula Nitsch.  Eleonore is survived by her sons, Ron (Debbie) Appletoft, Mission, KS and Jerry Appletoft, Houston, TX and two grandsons, Patrick and Quinn Appletoft.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Kansas City Hospice,1500 Meadow Lake Parkway, Suite 200, Kansas City, MO 64114.
