Janet Gurley Whitman

Janet Gurley Whitman, 85, died suddenly on December 26th, 2023.

Janet was born in June 6, 1938 in Kansas City, Missouri to George Hammond and Agnes Helen (Low) Gurley. She was a great granddaughter of August R. Meyer, the founding father of the Parks and Boulevard System in Kansas City, Missouri.

Janet attended Border Star Elementary, Barstow, Vassar College and the University of Oklahoma. She obtained her Master's Degree in Psychology from the University of Missouri Kansas City.

Janet was an avid artist who worked in several mediums and won awards for her pottery. 

She was the wife to the late Rt. Rev. Allen Whitman.

Survivors include her brother George H. Gurley II (Susan); sister Ann Rogers (Jim); daughters Alison Zimmer de Atayde (Rafael) and Gail Zimmer; step daughters Jan Whitman, Terri Whitman, Cindy Whitman and stepson Peter Whitman(Gayle); grandchildren: Alexander Zimmer, Edward Atayde and Rebecca Atayde, and her beloved dog, Rags.

A family graveside service will be held at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, January 9th at Corinth Cemetery, Prairie Village, Kansas followed by a memorial service at 3:00 pm at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 6401 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Janet’s memory to the National Bearded Collie Rescue at BCCA Charitable Trust at : bccacharitabletrust.org
