Grace Sumner

August 15, 1913 — July 17, 2015

Grace "Pauline" Sumner, 101, of Leawood, Kansas, died July 17, 2015 under hospice care at the Benton House of Prairie Village. Pauline was born August 15, 1913 in Carrollton, Missouri, the daughter of Allie L. and Ralph C. Carpenter. Pauline graduated from Carrollton High School where she played on the basketball team. She married Everett M. "Bill" Sumner on September 5, 1938 and cared for him at the home they built until his death in 1987. She worked at J.C. Penney as a young girl and later was manager of the hosiery department at Harzfeld’s Department Store for many years. She was an excellent bridge player and was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Kansas City and the original Builders class. Pauline loved telling stories, watching the birds outside her window, reciting poetry, singing songs, and had a wonderful sense of humor. More than anything else, she loved her home and spending time with her family. She is survived by her sons Brad Sumner (Pat) of Leawood, Kansas, Randy Sumner (Patty Lynch) of Clayton, Missouri, Mike Sumner (Gloria) Kenova, West Virginia, daughter Dana Ballentine (David) of Overland Park, Kansas, granddaughter Heather Grimsley (Nick) of Olathe, Kansas, grandson Greg Sumner of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, granddaughter Eliza Ballantyne (Thomas) of Oakland, California, granddaughter Jenny Heeter (Jay) of Golden, Colorado and great-grandchildren Sam and Bill Grimsley, Calvin Heeter, and Gabriel Ballantyne.  Pauline will be laid to rest at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri. A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday, August 15th at First Baptist Church, 100 W. Red Bridge Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64111 (the corner of Red Bridge Road and Wornall). The family wishes to thank Crossroads Hospice of Lenexa for the wonderful care provided to Pauline and also the staff at Benton House of Prairie Village. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that donations be made to the memorial fund of First Baptist Church of Kansas City, Missouri in her memory. Please offer condolences at www.overlandparkchapel.com.  Pauline kept a card for many years after her husband, Bill died. The saying on the front read, "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die." You'll forever live in our hearts, Pauline.
