Glenna Rau

June 11, 1920 — July 17, 2019

Glenna Marie (Bond) Rau, 99, of Overland Park, passed away on July 17, 2019, at Advent Health/Shawnee Mission Hospital.  She was a resident at The Atriums near 107th and Metcalf in Overland Park.

She was born on June 11, 1920, in Ft. Towson, OK, to William T. Bond and Ethel J (Mayfield) Bond, and had eight siblings.  She graduated from Sentinel High School in Sentinel, OK, in 1938.  She had a beautiful singing voice and sang on the radio in and around Oklahoma City.

Glenna met Orson A. Rau in Corpus Christi, TX, where Orson was stationed with the U.S. Navy Reserves for flight training.  After Orson switched over to the USMCR and transferred to San Diego, CA, Glenna joined him there, and they were married on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1942.  They were married 69 years before Orson passed away in Feb. 2012.  They lived in North Carolina and Southern California before moving to the Shawnee Mission area in 1956.  Survivors include a daughter, Diana (Dean) Supple of Michigan Valley, KS, two sons: Carl (Carol) Rau and Charles (Debbie) Rau, both of Olathe, KS; grandchildren, Carla (Tony) Roberts of Overland Park, KS, Davin Supple and Jason Supple, both of Michigan Valley, KS, Katie Rau and Kristen Rau, both of Overland Park, KS; great-grandchildren,

Faith and Connor Steiner and Elizabeth Roberts, all of Overland Park, KS; her brother Elbert (Colita) Bond of Oklahoma City, OK, and special cousin, Nancy (Harold) Purkey of Overland Park, KS, and other much-loved cousins, nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Glenna was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings: Edith, Mabel, Nolan, William, Ruth, Viola, and Wanda; and numerous aunts and uncles and cousins.

Glenna was a homemaker and very active in her children’s lives.  She ably took the helm whenever Orson was out of town with his job as a Captain for TWA.  She was a Camp Fire leader in her daughter’s early years, and Boy Scout leader/den mother for both sons. She was always active in her church (St. Mark’s United Methodist Church), teaching Sunday School and teaching in Vacation Bible School, helping with Argentine Food Kitchen, helping in the nursery, helping with the library, and she loved cutting and serving wedding cakes for receptions at church.  Although her singing days were over, she loved listening to the church choir and the bell choir, the talented organists, and worship music quartet, and accompanists.  She was a long-time member of the United Methodist Women’s Society when it was active.

Glenna loved to send cards for birthdays, anniversaries, and any other occasion, and would spend time choosing just the right card, which said just what she wanted for each person.  She absolutely loved to receive cards, would read them over and over, and would keep them displayed long after she received them.

Glenna was a loving role model for her family and anyone who knew her.  One of her favorite things was to sincerely compliment others and watch them light up with smiles.  She never compromised her beliefs and never wavered in her love for her savior, Jesus Christ.   Well done, Glenna/mom/grandma/great-grandma!
