Flora Whisler of Lenexa, KS, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at Lakeview Village in Lenexa. She was 102. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, October 25 at 1:30PM at the Shawnee United Methodist Church, 10700 Johnson Drive, Shawnee KS, followed by a graveside service at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens, 23215 W. 75th Street, Shawnee, KS. A light meal will be served at the Church upon return from the cemetery.
Flora was born on January 30, 1921 to William and Maude Schumacher, in Falcon, Missouri. At age one, she moved to Gas City, KS with her parents and twin brother, Francis. Flora graduated from Iola High School in 1939. After earning an Associate Teacher's Degree at Allen County Junior College, Flora taught grades 1-8 in a one room schoolhouse. In 1943, she moved to Kansas City and enrolled in Kansas City Business School, where she learned to operate a comptometer. She then joined the war effort by working in the payroll department at Pratt Whitney, who made engines for airplanes used in World War II.
On August 25, 1947. Flora married Delbert Whisler of Kansas City, Kansas at the First Methodist Church in Iola KS.
They were married 47 years until his death in 1994.
After the War, Flora worked at General Motors in Kansas City Kansas. She then worked at Kansas City Terminal Railway before taking time off to raise a family. In 1965, she went to work for JC Penney and stayed until 1971, when she moved to Oskaloosa KS. In 1976 Flora and her husband moved to Apache Junction AZ. While there she took painting classes and became a painter. She enjoyed painting scenes from the Arizona Desert.
After her husband passed away in 1994, Flora moved back to the Kansas City area to be close to her family. Soon after arriving, she went back to work for JC Penney this time in the call center. She worked there 9 years before retiring at age 86.
Flora was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert E. Whisler, twin brother Francis Schumacher, and sisters Carrie B. Mentzer, Laura P. Schumacher and Willa Schumacher. She is survived by her son, Wayne Whisler, daughter Diane Scrogham, grandsons Michael McClelland and Daniel Scrogham, nephew Alan Schumacher, and a great grandson, Adrick McClelland
