Carl Chappell

October 4, 1911 — December 30, 2006

Carl James Chappell, age 95, Overland Park, Kansas, died on Saturday, December 30, 2006. A Memorial Service will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, January 13, at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Carl?s name to Crossroads Hospice, (816) 333-9200 or to the College of the Ozarks, (417) 334-6411, ext. 2209. Mr. Chappell was born on October 4, 1911 in Republic County, Kansas to James Alamander Chappell and Grace Imo McClure. Carl received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Kansas State University in 1935. He was a member of the honor fraternities, Sigma Tau and Phi Kappa Phi. He was also a member of the social fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. He did post graduate work at American University in Washington, D.C. and at St. Louis University. As a civil engineer he worked for the Federal Bureau of Public Roads and the US Geological survey. He went on to work for the Portland Cement Association, where he retired as Regional Manager after 35 years. He was also a consultant for Monarch Cement Company and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Carl was a member of Rotary International for 61 years and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of Village Presbyterian Church for 44 years. He loved to hunt and fish with family and friends and always kept his gear ready to go at a moment?s notice. Carl was also an accomplished photographer. He was a Ham radio operator and a member of the MARS (Military Amateur Radio Service) and the National Defense Program. He had an Ararat abd membership in the Leawood Shrine Club and was active in the Shrine?s Ham Radio Club. He was a Mason with the Old Mission Lodge in Prairie Village, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Leona Hagstrom Chappell. They were married for 65 years. Survivors include his three children; Carol Jordan and her husband, Bruce of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Paul Chappell and his wife, Brenda of Pittsburg, Kansas and Susan Webb and her husband, Doug of Prairie Village, Kansas. He had six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
