Annagene Pavlakis

July 26, 1923 — December 18, 2014

Annagene Elendra Pavlakis, age 91, passed away on December 18, 2014 at Brookdale, Overland Park, Kansas. A private service and burial will be held at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 10:00 AM on December 23, 2014.

She was born on July 26, 1923 in Masontown, West Virginia and was the daughter of the late George and Ida Pinto. She graduated from Washington High School in East Chicago, Indiana and attended St. Margaret’s Hospital nursing program in Hammond, Indiana.  She then served as a U.S. Navy nurse during World War II.  Her first marriage with the late George Tjernlund ended in divorce and then she married George Pavlakis, a U.S. Air Force pilot, in June 1948 and became a leader in Air Force Wives Club activities, an avid world traveler who lived in Japan and Scotland with her husband and sons, rode a camel in Egypt, hiked to the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, and saw ships pass through the Panama Canal.  A hard worker, she had a twenty-year career in retail and upon her retirement was considered by the Hecht Company to be one of their finest shortage control experts.  She loved to read and was curious about everything, particularly art, fashion and interior decorating.  She was really pleased when her husband, George, introduced her to airplane travel and to the world’s greatest classical music, especially opera.  She and George left Maryland and retired in Overland Park, Kansas in 1989 and her two sons lived close by her in her final years.

She is preceded in death by a daughter from her first marriage, Susan K. Lom who died on May 5, 2006 in Wausau, Wisconsin.  Survivors include her husband, George Pavlakis, Overland Park, Kansas; two sons, George (Susan) Pavlakis, Overland Park, Kansas and Gregory S. Pavlakis, Leawood, Kansas; three grandchildren, Thomas (Karen) Lom, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Scott (Constance) Lom, Des Moines, Iowa, and Gregory A. Pavlakis, Overland Park, Kansas; sister Nancy (Roger) Whitaker, Sarasota, Florida.
