Frank Hursh

June 20, 1926 — October 14, 2017

Frank Whitaker Hursh was born June 20, 1926 in Kansas City, Kansas. He died October 14, 2017 at Kansas City Hospice House. He was descendant of the Hursh-Crook families of Osceola, MO. A lifelong resident of Kansas, he graduated Wyandotte High School in 1944. In 1945 he served the US Navy aboard the USS Duluth.

He met his wife, Mary Alice Walker, in high school.   They married in 1949, and have remained happily married for 68 years despite the fact she would never cook him gravy. She will ever be his Great Love. They were members of Countryside Christian Church.

Frank graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1953.  He was an attorney in private practice, mostly in Mission, Kansas.  He had a great respect for the law, and was so impeccably honest he wouldn’t even fix a parking ticket.  He also served as City Attorney, and later Municipal Judge, for the City of Mission.

He leaves a brother, Don and his wife Jane of Shawnee; his sons Lynn and his wife Michelle of Leawood, Kenneth and his wife Theresa of Roeland Park, and a daughter, Janie Wright, of Leawood.  His children recall his active participation in their lives – coaching youth sports teams, driving the station wagon on family vacations, grilling hamburgers on the patio. He was ever-ready with advice and humor.

He also leaves his grandchildren:  Genevieve and her husband Alex Zimmer, Andrew, Bernadette, Shane and Wyatt Hursh.  His grandchildren recall Frank’s many stories, only slightly embellished, about his life and those of their Hursh ancestors.

Frank liked sports.  As a young man he played baseball and football.  In middle age he enjoyed golf and fishing.  In recent years he provided color-commentary for anyone in the house as he watched Chiefs, Jayhawks or Royals games on TV.

A life of 91 years is hard to portray in these few lines. Frank’s family adored him as much as they will miss him. They celebrate his memory with three words:  Love, Laughter, Gravy.

A memorial service for family and close friends will be held on Saturday, October 21 at 10AM, at Overland Park Funeral Chapel, 8201 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66204.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Countryside Christian Church, 6101 Nall Ave, Mission, KS 66202.
